CHAPTER ELEVEN
It was interesting to watch the captain cook. Ramses had always assumed that sheâd grown up in a household where she didn't need to cook for herself, which indicated that she did it because she genuinely enjoyed it.
It also explained why she preferred to have most of her food kept fresh until the time came to cook it. There was no enjoyment in making up the standard protein and vitamin pastes. They lasted forever and were generally edible, and a bit of creativity could make them pretty damn tasty, but...
Working with fresh, real food was generally the more pleasant experience. Not that most ships were willing to put in the time, effort, and creds that usually went into bringing and storing fresh food on long-haul trips.
The captain had standards she refused to deviate from, which included cooking for herself instead of waiting for a crew member to help.
She even had a uniform she worked in, a white coat that she generally pulled up the sleeves on before containing her hair in a bit of net. She had utensils that she spent a few minutes cleaning and sharpening before starting the work of actually cooking anything. There was a sense of ritual to the whole thing, something that helped her relax and calm down while deftly handling knives.
He could understand that bit, at least. Nothing calmed him down before a fight more than caring for the weapons he would be using beforehand, including his body. Maybe she had something there.
The training as a cook had clearly gotten some use. Her knives cut and diced the fresh food with lightning speed. It was as calming to watch as it was to perform, and the captain had almost finished chopping by the time Amelia joined them in the mess hall.
It was the largest room on the ship, and considering the seats and table plus the kitchen, it was the best spot for social congregation. The captain held most crew meetings there when they didn't have a client on board.
Ramses watched a handful of vids while keeping an eye on the captain. Heâd learned a great deal from watching her. Eventually, he would build up the courage to ask if she could teach him some of her techniques, like how she chopped so quickly. Pietr worked on something that looked like the hydraulic manifold for an all-terrain combat bot, although for all Ramses knew, it could be almost anything.
He didn't have much of a background in engineering. Another talent that would be useful to acquire sometime down the road, although it held considerably less appeal as a mating ritual than cooking did, for example. Not that there was no appeal, but it was pretty niche.
Cooking hadnât helped him much so far either. He wasn't good enough at it yet.
It was a quiet moment between the group that didn't require them to add anything to it. It helped them get to know each other better without forcing them to mingle. It also helped pass
